Mozilla Firefox is a web-browser available to Windows, iOS, MacOS, Linux, and Android. It packs some exciting features like it is 30% lighter than Chrome and it also provides some features like Private Browsing and tracking protection. Despite the fact that it is lighter than chrome but for some users out there, Firefox is using too much memory that makes firefox browser slower and in some extreme cases, it can cause a crash that leaves a user exasperated.
Don’t worry I will list out working methods to prevent Firefox from using too much memory.
You should Update Firefox browser to the latest version and FireFox claims that the latest version includes improvements about memory usage.
You might be using some memory heavy extensions and themes which can cause Firefox to use more memory than it should.
Start FireFox in Safe Mode. Click the menu button >> Help >> Restart with Add-ons Disabled…>> Click Restart >> Start In Safe Mode >> FireFox will start in Safe mode.
After starting the firefox in safe mode, you can observe the memory usage. If you notice some improvement then disable extensions and plugins.
Adjust Content Process Limit
First of all, let us understand what is the Content Process Limit. Each opened tab can run its own process, for example, if you have active 4 tabs with 4 content processes now if the fifth tab is opened it will share the process with one of the active tabs already. If one of the tabs crashed then it doesn’t bring down the other tab it’s sharing the process with.
This technique is really helpful in enhancing the performance and reduces the crashes. However, if the default setting is not working for you, follow below methods carefully.
Go to menu >> options >> scroll down >> performance >> uncheck use recommended performance settings.
Set Content Process Limit to 1.
Now restart and check memory usage.
About:config is a list of hidden settings/preferences that are generally not available in the options menu. Changing parameters of these preferences are a bit risky and can cause the firefox browser to slow down or crash.
Type about:config in the address bar of the FireFox Browser.
Look for tabs.remote.autostart.
Double click on it to change the value from true to false.
Restart Firefox browser.
Hiding intrusive content
There are tons of web-pages that often display useless content on the screen that might cause a delay in loading the webpage for example – A Flash Content.
Go to menu >> addons >> Plugins Panel.
Look for Shockwave Flash on the list.
Set Shockwave Flash to Ask to Activate.
Enable Flash hardware acceleration
It simply means that the content rendering in full screen can be accelerated by hardware. It eases memory usage in case of dedicated graphics card memory.
Go to the page where flash content is being displayed.
There is a good chance that other applications are using high memory that will directly affect all other application performance so just end the processes from task manager that are not important at that time.
If you are running an Old PC with 2 GB ram or lower, it is time to upgrade your ram to at least 4 GB to meet current situations.
